The joy of being an athlete …

February 3, 2019

We often hear or say that each training session is different and has its share of trials, adventures, joys and sorrows. One thing is undeniable: through every training session (or preparation for any competition) you will have to deal with the possibility of injuries.

It’s barely been a month since I seriously resumed my training for a major competition and already my body is sending me alarm signals: aches, tingling, pain, uncomfortable sensations in places that I did not know could hurt. I try to remember if I have ever felt like this at any other time in the past. I tell myself that I am getting older, that I must be careful and conscientious when I train. And there, THE thought: “What if I listen carefully to what my body has to say to me?”

It’s easy to want to ignore the pains, and seek to overcome your body and the obstacles of working out, but the challenge is to be alert to all the messages our body sends us. Some will understand that the message is a warning: “STOP”, but what if we dig a little deeper? Often, these messages are just to warn us. Usually, there is a positive intention behind it and you have to know how to hear and understand it. It can be a sign to be more conscientious, more present and aware during the training. So, I put 275 lbs in the deadlift instead of the 300 that I know I can take; I do 10 reps instead of the 12-15 on the program, just for today. Because for TODAY and today only, my body is sending me signals that I must listen to if I want to get to the finish line and above all “perform” as I envision it!

And if, in addition to listening to these signs, listening to my body and my inner voice, I take advantage of this awareness but also be grateful and recognize that it’s not just my body as a whole working for me but also each and every part of my body, each cell, each organ. They all work together for me and in collaboration with each other, without my having to think about it. If I recognize that my body and all of the systems that make it up come together to see the changes I want, then the changes will begin.

So today and every other day of this training program, I will be aware, the present and, above all, grateful of the process that is underway, in order to facilitate this long road that I have chosen to take.
